The Government of Belize through financing from the World Bank has selected the Institute for International Urban Development (I2UD) to provide technical assistance to seven Town and City Councils (TCC) in Belize, namely Belmopan, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Orange Walk, Corozal, Dangriga, Benque Viejo and Punta Gorda. The main goal of the project is to strengthen TCCs capacity to fulfill their upcoming urban management mandates under the draft Municipal Government Act (Bill), primarily the preparation of Municipal Development Plans (MDPs). A MDP is a planning document that anticipates and characterizes future municipal development needs, and establishes strategies, policies and regulations to guide that development according to the municipality’s vision. By the end of the project, and with the technical assistance provided by the I2UD team, each TCC will have completed and adopted its own MDP and be provided with tailored mechanisms to endeavour its phased implementation.
