LAND AND HOUSING

Fifth World Bank Urban Research Symposium (2009)

Mona Serageldin, Erick Guerra and Christa Lee-Chuvala prepared a paper entitled Climate change in the local development agenda: Promoting resilience through enhanced understanding of early threats. Serageldin presented the paper on June 28 at the symposium in Marseilles.

State of North African Cities (2008/2009)

IIUD completed the State of North African Cities report for UN HABITAT in early 2010. Mona Serageldin, François Vigier, and Kendra Leith prepared this update of our 2008 report which focuses on income inequalities and land management issues. It will be presentated as part of The State of African Cities 2010: Governance, Inequality and the Economies of African Cities.

In August, 2008 Mona Serageldin, François Vigier, Christa Lee-Chuvala and Erick Guerra finished a paper on “The State of North African Cities” for a larger publication to be released by UN HABITAT on the State of African Cities. This report is a supplement to its State of the World Cities Report released every two years, and analyzes existing and emerging trends in human settlement patterns across the African continent. It will reach a wide audience of decision-makers.

The North Africa section discusses trends specific to the countries of Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan and Mauritania within the African context. These nations are characterized by higher levels of urbanization, stronger central governance, a more arid climate and higher GDP per capita than their Sub-Saharan African counterparts.  Several of the countries in the region, particularly Egypt and Tunisia, have had substantial success in reducing the slum populations in their major cities, and others like Morocco have instituted successful programs to provide housing to their low income populations.  However, the region still faces high levels of youth unemployment and significant environmental threats related to the impacts of climate change.

A free download of the 2008 State of the African Cities Report is available through UN HABITAT.

Fourth World Bank Urban Research Symposium (2009)

John Driscoll and Christa Lee-Chuvala presented a paper on Delivery of Security of Tenure, Infrastructure Services and Access to Finance through Community Based Approaches at the World Bank's Fourth Urban Research Symposium, May 14-16, 2007.

The Millennium Project (2003-2004)

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by world leaders at the U.N. Millennium Summit in September 2004 set targets to be achieved by 2015 in order to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degredation, and gender discrimination. The United Nations Secretary General and the Administrator of the UNDP launched the Millennium Project directed by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General to recommend strategies to achieve the MDGs. Ten task forces led the projects research effort focusing on identifying priority actions and the institutional and financial measures required for their implementation.

Mona Serageldin was a member of the Task Force 8 on improving the lives of 100 million slum-dwellers by 2020. She prepared a background paper for the task force on Local Authority-Driven Interventions to Improve the Lives of Slum Dwellers, an edited version of which was published in the November 2005 issue of the Global Urban Development Magazine. Elda Solloso and Luis Valenzuela worked with her on the review and documentation of 50 best practices worldwide. The paper highlighted the key features underlying their success namely partnerships, strategic priorities, multi-sectoral action plans and focused programs targeting vulnerable populations and marginalized areas. A condensed version of the paper entitled "Building Successful Partnerships" is presented as Chapter 2 of the Task Force Interim Report submitted to the UN Secretary General in February 2004.

The 2001 and 2005 Global Reports on Human Settlement are avaible through UN-HABITAT.
