UN-Habitat State of Arab Cities 2012

UN-HABITAT is preparing its first State of Arab Cities Report for 2012. The team leading research for the report are Fran├žois Vigier, Mona Serageldin, Kendra Leith, and Linda Shi.

Like the State of African Cities, this report will address urbanization trends and challenges in the Mashreq (Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria), Maghreb (Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia), the Gulf Cooperation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE), and the Southern Tier Countries (Comoros, Djibouti, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen).

The Institute is responsible for researching and writing the entire report, which discusses and analyzes existing and emerging urbanization trends across cities in the Arab world. Topics include:
  • Demographics and urban growth
  • The economic role of cities
  • Urban poverty and housing conditions
  • Urban environmental and transportation challenges
  • Transnational migration and urban governance.

Research is ongoing, and the full report is expected to launch at the World Urban Forum in 2012.
