Giving to the Institute

Dear Friends of the Institute,

Over the last six and a half years, we have made remarkable progress.

Our work on cross-border planning in Ireland has been recognized by the President of the Republic of Ireland as having made a major contribution to the reconciliation process between the North and the South. In March 2011, the communities along the eastern North/South border signed a Memorandum of Understanding that commits them to strengthen and promote social, cultural and economic links within their combined districts.

As part of our ongoing research activities, we have recently completed a 275-page report on The State of the Arab Cities for UN-Habitat; it will be made available at the September 2012 World Urban Forum to be held in Naples, Italy.

In South Africa, Tanzania, and Bolivia, the Institute has been actively promoting a participatory process to ensure the coordinated management of urban and peri-urban development and the targeting of public improvements to the neediest neighborhoods.

Through our internships, we continue to prepare young professionals and graduate students for careers in development. As one of our recent interns generously wrote us from Dakar where he is completing a semester abroad,

“My internship at I2UD was one of the most meaningful experiences of my undergraduate education at Northeastern University. It opened my eyes to the complexity of development and allowed me to see with new understanding how policy and planning choices can impact real people’s lives. I look forward ever more enthusiastically to a career in development, and hope you’ll help support I2UD so that more students can benefit from the amazing team at the Institute.”  –Warren Hagist.
In 2012, our development activities will focus on two new topics:
  • Developing an interdisciplinary approach to mitigate the local effects of climate change, with an emphasis on lower-income neighborhoods in developing countries.
  • Continuing to develop intervention strategies to provide pro bono assistance to older New England industrial cities and devise strategies to improve their economic base.

We are counting on the participation of all of our friends to support I2UD’s important initiatives. Your gift in any amount will allow us to continue our work in areas of greatest need throughout the world, to develop new innovative approaches to better urban management, to support our internship program.

  • Ten gifts of $500 will support one intern who, like Warren, is eager to begin a career in urban planning and development.
  • Five gifts of $1,000 will finance our participation in international networks.
  • A gift of $5,000 will help us provide assistance to a New England town.

Thank you for your continued support.
